-
A Newcomer In Belles Lettres
-

-
"I shall begin my story--or my nightmare, as I think of it--at the Paris ready-to-wear collections last year." So opens
- the debut novel of supermodel NAOMI CAMPBELL. Straight off,
- she appeals to universal human experience: Is there anyone for
- whom the Paris pret-a-porter week has not at some point been
- a nightmare? Swan, the world's most famous model, suffers tragedies
- that include the death of her sister Venetia, the murder of
- her nanny, the disappearance of her brother and the misunderstanding
- of her public. "If only they knew what I'm like inside," she
- laments. Naomi was reportedly given a $200,000 advance for the
- book. That and an uncredited collaborator.

-
It is a rite of Texas politics that on the first day of dove
- season, candidates go ahunting--with cameras in tow. GEORGE
- W. BUSH, a son of the former President, is running for Governor,
- and he dutifully appeared near dawn one day last week to do
- some dove shooting. Instead he shot a killdeer, a protected
- species whose flight and markings are distinctly undovelike.
- Bush was fined $130 and was mocked by aides to his opponent,
- Governor Ann Richards (who also was out that morning with a
- shotgun but didn't hit anything).

-
Putter, Irons--and Woods
-

-
TIGER WOODS achieved a stunning three-part feat last week when
- he won the 99th U.S. Amateur Golf Championship (previously won
- by Jack Nicklaus, among other legends). Woods is the first black
- winner and, at 18, the youngest, and he won after being six
- holes down in the final round. "Coming back from that far back
- is the best thing about winning," he said. Officials say it
- was the greatest comeback in the tournament's history.

-
SEEN & HEARD
-

-
Aggressive world chess champion GARY KASPAROV has cowed many
- an opponent, but last week he challenged one not susceptible
- to intimidation. At an exhibition in London, Kasparov went up
- against CHESS GENIUS 2 in a computerized game, and surprisingly
- enough, he lost. The game is programmed to consider 100,000
- positions per second. Less than amused by his defeat, Kasparov
- stormed off the stage following the electronic match.
-

-
BOY GEORGE, the overly maquillaged British glam rocker, pointedly
- eschews masculinity. Yet a woman claimed he fathered her son.
- Her paternity suit was dismissed by a British court last week.
- George said the birth would have to have been "a miracle."
